Matius 11:4-5

11:4 Jesus answered them, ¹  “Go tell John what you hear and see: ²  11:5 The blind see, the ³  lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news proclaimed to them.

Matius 13:16-17

13:16 “But your eyes are blessed ⁴  because they see, and your ears because they hear. 13:17 For I tell you the truth, ⁵  many prophets and righteous people longed to see ⁶  what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

[11:4]  ¹ tn Grk “And answering, Jesus said to them.” This construction is somewhat redundant in English and has been simplified in the translation.

[11:4]  ² sn What you hear and see. The following activities all paraphrase various OT descriptions of the time of promised salvation: Isa 35:5-6; 26:19; 29:18-19; 61:1. Jesus is answering not by acknowledging a title, but by pointing to the nature of his works, thus indicating the nature of the time.

[11:5]  ³ tn Grk “and the,” but καί (kai) has not been translated since English normally uses a coordinating conjunction only between the last two elements in a series of three or more. Two other conjunctions are omitted in this series.

[13:16]  ⁴ sn This beatitude highlights the great honor bestowed on the disciples to share in this salvation.

[13:17]  ⁵ tn Grk “truly (ἀμήν, amhn) I say to you.”

[13:17]  ⁶ sn This is what past prophets and righteous people had wanted very much to see, yet the fulfillment had come to the disciples. This remark is like 1 Pet 1:10-12 or Heb 1:1-2.
